Spoiler alert: you’re using the wrong mop to clean your hardwood! In St. Charles, our customers love hardwood flooring for their homes, but many of them don’t know these key tips for keeping their hardwood investment squeaky clean.
At Floor Coverings International West County, MO, we want our customers to get the most out of their hardwood flooring, so we decided to write this handy guide. Read on for a few bright ideas on how to keep your hardwood floors shiny.
Step One: Prep
First, prepare your canvas: clear the room by scooting aside any easily moved furniture. To make this safer for your floors, consider purchasing furniture pads to go under the legs of your chairs, tables, and couches. These pads will allow you to push furniture around without scratching your precious hardwood.
Second, dry mop or vacuum your floor to remove any dust or debris. If you have a higher-end vacuum it probably has a hardwood setting, which will make your job super easy.
Step Two: Mop
Mop your floors, making sure to move your mop with the grain of your wood. If you have polyurethane sealed floors, you can use a damp (not wet) mop to do the job. Your cleaning solution should be simple: just water with a few drops of dish liquid or a dash of vinegar. Caution: if your floors are not finished with a water-repelling sealant, skip the wet-mop altogether.
Step Three: Buff
Mopping will leave a slight residue on your hardwood. To get your floors shining again, take a soft cloth and rub the floor in circular motions. You can also use a manufacturer recommended wood cleaner for added sparkle.
Extra Credit: Choose the Right Tools
Even with a good sealant applied, the number one enemy of hardwood is moisture. Yes, it’s possible to damage your floors over time if you consistently use a mop that is too wet.
This is not a swab the deck situation so forgot about using a string mop, or even a sponge mop. Your best bet is to use a flat mop with a microfiber head, and if you must use another variety, make sure to wring it out thoroughly before going anywhere near your floors.
