O Angelina

Please tell us a little about yourself.

Layla, an 8-year-old Carolina Dog, and I blog together, so let me break this down.

I think of myself as a creator. I always go back to that idea: create the life you love. And that’s what I try to do. What that means for me is I spend my days writing and teaching at a local community college. I love these jobs, but they also give me the flexibility to walk Layla and our two other dogs (Finley and Bogart), sit on the stairs petting our cat (Trouble), peruse our front yard garden (in progress) with a cup of coffee, and slowly decorate our first house.

Layla is an 8-year-old, somewhat grumpy, Carolina Dog. She is much smarter than me and Dan (her people), and she manipulates us into, usually, doing whatever she wants: giving her bones, giving her pancakes, giving her all the room on the couch. She spends most of her days sleeping on a chair that was supposed to be a reading chair, but is actually her throne.

Why did you decide to start a blog? What do you enjoy about blogging?

I started our blogs because I wanted to write about everything I love, a little less formally than I would elsewhere. I guess I enjoy sharing. I also enjoy looking back at what I’ve done and realizing it’s fun enough to write about.

On the other hand, Layla needs a voice because no one at home listens to her, despite how vocal she is. She really has opinions on everything, growling when we come home from work to when the puppy gets too close to her toes. That’s why she started blogging. And she enjoys it because she can use the blog as an excuse to do fun things like going to a local lake on Fridays or even visiting local breweries.

What type of flooring is good for homes with pets?

Hardwood. We bought our house a little over a year ago, and it’s all carpeted. The carpet is nice in the bedrooms, but in the main areas, especially the den, it gets so dirty. Our dogs know the command, “Tub,” but we don’t wash them every day. And we’re trying to grow grass in our backyard, but it’s currently a mud pit. Our first major home renovation will be installing hardwood.

Layla would like to add that hardwood is going to make it a lot more challenging to play tug-of-war, but she thinks strategically placed rugs will help.

Do you follow any other blogs for inspiration?  If so, which ones?

We’ve always loved Ruff Wear’s Dog Blog, but we actually have been getting a lot of inspiration from Instagram lately: @tuft_diymckim, @wallpoems, @travel_run_puppy_repeat, @daysofdarby, @dogsincharlotte, @dogsthathike, @hikingdogsofinstagram.

Can you explain a recent project or post you’ve been working on?

I’ve been working on painting our stairwell. I decided to paint a mountain mural. I’m getting good with the ladder and the heating pad. And the guys in the Lowes’ painting department love me because I come in every day asking for more paint samples.

Layla is working on running again. She has a bad hip, but we’ve found that walking every day really helps. She loves going on runs with us, so we’re slowly working her back up to that. (And currently she’s working on a pre-dinner snooze.)
